Windows Refresh Rate- If every time you add a new folder, or you delete something from a window, and you have to hit F5 (Refresh) to see the results, here is how to make Windows refresh automatically: Start the Registry Editor. Double-click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Open the System folder, then the CurrentControlSet folder. Then the Control folder, then select the Update folder. Go to the right pane and right-click on UpdateMode and select Modify. Change the value from 01 to 00. Click on OK and exit the Registry Editor.

Hardware Diagnostic Tool- with OSR2, If you have the OSR2 version of Windows 95 and you have the OSR2 CD-ROM, you can find a hardware diagnostic tool called Hwdiag.exe. You can find this program in \Other\Misc\Hwtrack on the CD-ROM. You can run it from the CD or copy it to your hard drive and run it from there. It works on all Windows 95 versions.
Hwdiag.exe lists every key in the Windows Registry that refers to hardware in your system.
Win95 Installation Files- If you've added a new drive to your system, chances are that your CD-ROM drive got a new drive letter. Now every time you need to update some Windows 95 files, you have to tell Windows 95 where to find the Win95 CD-ROM. Here is how to change the location where Windows 95 looks for it's files: Start the Registry Editor. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows \CurrentVersion\Setup In the right-hand pane find the SourcePath key
Double-click this key and change the location for your Win95 files
Default mail program- If you have Netscape and Internet Explorer, there is no way to make Netscape Mail the default mail program (so it will come up when you click on an e-mail link in a help file, program, etc.). Back up your registry first. To fix this, go to the registry, then to the section HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command. Under command, enter the full path to Netscape and then %1 (mine looks like this: c:\internet\Netscape\program\netscpae.exe %1.
Updating the Registry- Without rebooting -- If you use some of the tricks
listed here or otherwise change your Registry normally you'd have to reboot
your computer. There is a faster way though, just press Ctrl-Alt-Del, select
Explorer, and click End Task. When Windows asks "Are you sure you want to.. Shut Down Your Computer?", click No, then click End Task at the next prompt.

Modem performance- Editing the MTU setting in Win95: (Maximum Transmission Units) This by default is set very low, you can increase this and improve your transfer rate
1) Run the program REGEDIT.
2) Open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder by double-clicking on it.
3) Then open System--CurrentControlSet--Services--Class--NetTrans
4) You will see several folder under the NetTrans folder. Each folder holds protocol information. Single-clicking on the folders displays the contents. The protocol used in the folders is held in the DriverDesc parameter field. Open each folder until you see the DriverDesc (Driver Description) of TCP/IP. There may be more than one folder containing the TCP/IP parameter -- you need to change them all as indicated below. Do not change folders with other protocols.
5) Highlight the folder containing a TCP/IP protocol by single-clicking it. In the Registry Editor, select Edit Menu. Under the Edit menu select:
New -- String Value This will create a new entry. Name (or rename) this new entry as MaxMTU.
6) The optimum MTU setting can differ for each system. The three settings tested are 576 - 1524 - 4328. You will need to experiment with the values to find the best for your system. With the right mouse button, click on the new entry. A submenu will appear. Select MODIFY and type one of the values above. Click OK to accept.
7) Exit the Registry Editor. The changes will be saved automatically.
Editing the MSTCP(RWIN):
1) Choose START and RUN the program REGEDIT.
2) Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then open: System--CurrentControlSet--Services--VxD--MSTCP
3) The value setting of the RcvWindow will depend on what value you chose for the MTU. If you chose 576 then the RcvWindows value should be 2144. 1524 uses a 5936 RcvWindow value and 4328 uses 34304. Select New and then String Value. As the string value type DefaultRcvWindow exactly as you see it here!
4) Double-click on the new value, and type the value.
5) Exit the Registry Editor. Restart Windows
Clearing the Desktop:Icons- Inbox and Recycle Bin. Clearing your desktop
of the Inbox or Recycle Bin icons launch RegEdit and go to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
explorer\Desk top\NameSpace folder. NameSpace contains within it two folders
that correspond to the icons for the Inbox and the Recycle Bin. The folder names
are ridiculously long and made up mostly of numbers. But when you select one
of the folders, an object in the right pane tells you if the folder is for the Inbox or
the Recycle Bin. You can then delete the folder corresponding to the icon that
you don't want appearing on your desktop.
You can always get to the Inbox from Start/Programs/Microsoft Exchange and
use the [Delete] key to delete a selected file. If you need to get into the Recycle
Bin or restore files, just go the Recycle Bin folder in your primary hard drive's
root folder.
