Tracer route and DNS-lookup
Doing a Tracer Route on a web site "domain
name or DNS numbers", can show you how the servers are connected to the
Internet and the "speed".
Windows95/98/2000 and DOS
From the start button go to ether
"run" or programs - MS-dos Prompt, (we recommend MS-Dos Prompt, it
will keep the window open after you run tracert.exe) Type in tracert.exe
followed with a space then the domain name or DNS numbers of the web site your
checking. This will do a trace from your computer through your dial-up ISP to
the web site.
What you will notice first is all the
"hops" or servers you have to go through to get to the site, of
course the lower the number of hops the quicker the site. But what is most
important in the ms. (milliseconds), through each of the servers, pay
attention to this, the lower the number the faster the web site,
Numbers from100-199 good, from 200-299 fair, 300-399 not good, 400 and above
bad, if you see high numbers right from the first or second hop its your ISP and
this will throw off the rest of the numbers.
You can also download shareware programs called
VisualRoute,
or NetInfo with a map of the world
that shows the route your taking.
